Fun Science Erupting Moon Cake Recipe

A fabulous fun activity to do with kids in the kitchen. Make a super fun cake that is yummy to eat!

Ingredients: 1.5 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, pinch of salt, 5 TBS cooking oil, 1 TSP baking powder, 1 TSP vanilla flavoring, 1 TBS vinager, 1 cup of milk, a handful of raisins or chocolate chips!

Method:

# 1 – Preheat the oven to 180 oC. Grease a round 9 inch cake pan. Mix together the flour, salt and sugar in the pan.

# 2 – Make shallows, or “craters”. A small one, a medium and a large one. In to the large pour in the oil, medium = baking powder, small = vanilla flavoring.

# 3 – Pour the vinegar into the medium crater and stand back as it bubbles and fizzes. Once it has stopped pour in the milk and mix until all the ingredients are combined.

# 4 – Sprinkle over the “moon rocks” or raisins and pop in the oven. The cake should take about 30 minutes, but you’ll know when it’s done if a tooth pick comes out clean.

Once the cake is cooked and cooled enough to eat you can sprinkle it with icing sugar (moon dust) and cut out different phases of the moon until it’s eventually all gone! Have fun and enjoy your erupting moon cake!
