Online science course for home educated children

Our next course of online home ed science sessions starts on the 14th June May 2022 and is aimed at home educated children aged 5-11. Sessions run at 10.15am-11am weekly on Tuesdays for 5 weeks. This course will be run via Zoom and you will need a computer to access the sessions. A webcam is desirable but not essential and your child does not have to be on camera. Just £7 per session and £3 for each additional sibling. This price includes a set of equipment sent to you to be used in each session (1 set per child). You will also be asked to provide a few things from around the home such as scissors, pens and cups of water (all items needed are listed below)

These 45 minute home ed primary science sessions are run online by Chemical Cress, our Fun scientist and provide children with an opportunity to socialise whilst learning. Sharing results is a key part of scientific research and these sessions will encourage collaboration and sharing ideas.

All sessions are recorded and some families chose to join in via the recordings only. We are available for email support during the week so you can still ask questions, even if you don’t attend the actual session. Our topic for this term is living things.

Week 1 – Plants – Who is Mrs Nerg and what has she got to do with living things? We will be finding out as we discuss what makes something ‘alive’ to start our topic of living things. We will also be looking at the second largest kingdom of life – plants! Children will be doing an experiment with a leaf to see photosynthesis in action and will be creating their own mini greenhouse.

You will need: Clear glass or cup filled with water, hole punch, green leaf, yoghurt pot/similar, clingfilm.

Week 2 – Animal Classification – The largest Kingdom of living things is the animal kingdom and in this week we will be looking at how we classify animals into different groups based on shared characteristics. We will also be examining (fake) poo samples to see what different animals have been eating and seeing if we can complete tasks with an exoskeleton on our fingers.

You will need: Scissors, sticky tape, scrap paper x 2 sheets, pen

Week 3 – Invertebrates (minibeasts) – Now we have learned all about classification, we are going to take a closer look at the biggest phylum of the animal kingdom – arthropods! This phylum includes at least 80% of the animals we know of including insects, spiders and lobsters. Children will learn how to classify an insect, how spiders make webs and how bees help with pollination.

You will need: A cup or glass with something you’d like to drink, straw, scissors

Week 4 – DNA – All living things have DNA, from bacteria to humans, we all have this code telling our body what to do. In this session, children will be learning how DNA works, using beads to code part of the DNA sequence from a cobra’s venom and making their own bacteria model. Children will also be finding out if they can taste a chemical called PTC.

You will need: Balloon pump, sticky tape, scissors

Week 5 – Adaptation – In the final week of this term we will be looking at how animals have adapted to live in their habitats. We will be playing some adaptation games, experimenting with camouflage and pretending to be animals hunting for food.

You will need – Plate x 2, empty cup x 2

The price for a block of four sessions is £35 for the first child. Additional siblings are welcome to share a screen and work on the activities with their own set of equipment and there is an additional total cost of £15 per additional sibling for the additional kit. All sessions will be recorded so that you can access the session even if you are unavailable at the time of the session. We are also on hand for help and support between sessions too.

This club will be strictly limited to 15 screens so that every child gets the most out of the club.
